General Description of the Job Class

  • Responsible for decontamination, assembly of linen packs, operation of steam, EtO and other forms of sterilization as well as all monitoring processes included with same. Maintain adequate inventory for assembly of instruments and equipment. Perform multiple tasks that assist in the daily operation of all units as well as being responsible for customer service
  • Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed by procedure. Perform the operation of the index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners as well as manually cleaning instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures.
  • Disassemble, clean, assemble and test patient care equipment for proper functioning; route cleaned equipment to appropriate holding areas. Perform simple maintenance on equipment by use of the Bowie-Dick test packs, cleaning of filters and drains and use of biological test packs. Can differentiate between single-use and reusable items. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving and reordering as assigned via computer.
  • Use chemicals in the appropriate fashion taking into consideration the intended use of the chemical as well as the chemical's function; knowledge of the appropriate PPE is also necessary. Sort dirty linen, trash and BFI and disposes of them according to established procedure. Use PPE in the appropriate fashion in all areas. Linen for packs is inspected, folded and assembled for sterilization in the prescribed manner according to documented policies and procedures.
  • Use computers for logging trays, equipment and case carts and for documenting missing equipment.
  • Perform and participate in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning assembling and packaging of medical/surgical material to include, but not limited to, linen, instruments and equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.
  • Prepare trays for designated areas according to prescribed procedures. Wrap and/or package items for specified areas according to procedures prescribed for those designated areas. Must be able to operate bar code instrument tracking system. Disassemble, clean, assemble and test instrumentation for proper functioning.
  • Use knowledge of different types of sterilization materials and equipment to choose the appropriate material for sterilization processes. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving and recording as assigned.
  • Extensive knowledge regarding processes used in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling and packaging of medical/surgical material to include, but not limited to, linen, instruments and equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.
  • Work with Operating Room personnel to ensure specialty trays are handled in the prescribed manner.
  • Assist with teaching of new hires and work as resource person for other staff as well as other units in hospital.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

Work requires the ability to understand and follow instructions generally acquired through a high school education. Some post-secondary education preferred.

Experience:

At least two years of experience to acquire advanced knowledge of central sterile processes.

Degrees, License, and/or Certification:

Certification through a national certification board for Central Service. i.e CBSPD, IAHCSMM, REQUIRED Central Service Technician certificate REQUIRED
